About REBEQA

Rebeqa grew up steeped in the down-home hippie doctrine of her rural Alaskan hometown and the good old-fashioned German Mennonite beliefs of her mother.  She was a grubby, barefoot child with an affinity for mud pies and playing with toy cars in the dirt.  Her father was a bush pilot so much of her childhood was spent in the wilderness, free of running water and electricity.  Rebeqa's rural childhood also limited her access to modern media.  Antique Victrola records and cassettes of 1940’s radio shows stood in for 80’s rock and television.  Her time was filled with other pastimes, such as singing, writing, and traveling - usually with a backpack and tent.

When it came time for professional music training Rebeqa relocated to Chicago to study opera at the Wheaton Conservatory of Music.   A four-month backpacking stint in Europe during her third year fostered a new vision toward various world music styles.  Rebeqa emerged four years later with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and settled in Seattle so she could be near the mountains and forests once again.

In Seattle, Rebeqa has had the pleasure of performing at several local venues, including Trinity Nightclub , Ibiza Dinner Club, La Spiga Osteria, the Bellevue Art Museum, and in the La Familia Gallery artist series.  In addition, Rebeqa acted as featured soloist for the NeoDandi Fashion House during their seasonal runway shows for seasons 2003-2005.

Rebeqa’s pioneer upbringing and home ties permeate her lyrics, revealing a deep belief that life’s best gifts are simplicity and resilience.  Her music style is a distinctive blend of a Big Band and Woody Guthrie-soaked childhood and world music study of recent years.
